Sammy Allen, a seasoned photographer with a decade of practice under her belt, is an artist whose photography does much more than capture moments. With a focus on the interplay of light and shadow, Sammy’s work embodies an attention to detail and an understanding of the nuances of lighting. She uses this skill not merely as a tool, but as a language to articulate narratives and evoke emotions within her imagery.
Sammy’s not only a creative photographer here in Phoenix, but a lighting tech, studio hand, film developer and now educator. She loves to travel, read, and hang with her cat Heart.

Studio Lighting 101 is back! Unlock your potential with our comprehensive Lighting 101 course. Geared towards beginners or anyone wanting a studio gear refresh, this class aims to empower you with the fundamental knowledge needed to utilize the power of studio lighting effectively. In this hands-on workshop, we’ll focus on strobes, modifiers, positioning, and studio safety protocols. Through a combination of theory and practical exercises, you'll learn how to manipulate light to create stunning, professional-quality images.
By the end of class you will understand the function and operation of strobe lighting equipment, including power settings, sync methods, and triggering mechanisms.
We will explore a variety of light modifiers such as softboxes, umbrellas and reflectors. You will learn to choose the right modifier for your desired effect.
You will be introduced to key techniques for achieving flattering portraits and balance lighting.
By the end of Studio Lighting 101, you’ll leave with lots of new knowledge and the ability to walk into studio settings with confidence :)
